Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a referral to see an ophthalmologist?
Yes. To claim a Medicare rebate for your consultation, you’ll need a valid referral from your GP, optometrist, or another specialist. Referrals from GPs and optometrists are usually valid for 12 months, while specialist referrals are valid for 3 months.
How long will my appointment take?
Please allow around 2 hours for your first appointment. This ensures we have enough time to perform a thorough examination, any necessary tests, and answer your questions. Follow-up visits are usually shorter.
Will my eyes be dilated?
In many cases, yes. Dilating drops allow us to examine the back of your eyes properly. Your vision may be blurry and more sensitive to light for a few hours afterwards, so we recommend not driving until your vision clears. Sunglasses can help with comfort.
Can I drive after my appointment?
If your pupils are dilated, you should not drive until your vision returns to normal. Please plan ahead and arrange transport if needed.
What should I bring to my appointment?
- Your current glasses (if you wear them)
- A list of current medications and allergies
- Your referral letter (if it hasn’t already been sent)
- Your Medicare, DVA, Health Fund or Pension cards
- Any previous eye test results or scans
Is there parking available?
Yes. There is ample, free on-site parking at RiverCity Private Hospital. Please enter via Wienholt Street, off Milton Road. Our clinic is on Level 3, 401 Milton Road, Auchenflower QLD 4066.
Is the clinic accessible by public transport?
Yes. Auchenflower Train Station is a short walk away, and bus services run along Milton Road.
What conditions do you treat?
We provide expert care for a wide range of eye conditions, including:
- Cataracts
- Glaucoma
- Corneal conditions (keratoconus, Fuchs dystrophy, infections, transplants, ocular surface disease)
- Pterygium
- Retinal conditions (macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, retinal tears and vein occlusions)
What if I have an urgent problem?
If you have sudden vision loss, flashes of light, a curtain-like shadow in your vision, or a painful red eye, please call us immediately. If we are closed, seek urgent care at the nearest emergency department.
What fees should I expect?
Consultation fees depend on the type of appointment and tests required. Medicare rebates are available with a valid referral. We are a private billing practice. If you are covered by private health insurance they will usually provide rebates for inpatient treatment you require. Our reception team will provide an estimate before your appointment. For inpatient treatments you will be given separate quotes for any theatre or anaesthetists fees. Fees are payable on the day of service.
Your vision and comfort are our priority.
We’re here to guide you with care every step of the way.
