Retinal Vein Occlusion
Understanding the condition
The retina is the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. It relies on healthy blood vessels to deliver oxygen and remove waste products. A retinal vein occlusion (RVO) occurs when one of these veins becomes blocked, similar to a “clot” in the eye. This can cause sudden or gradual changes in vision, depending on the location and severity of the blockage.
Symptoms
- Blurred or distorted central vision
- Sudden loss of part or all of the vision in one eye
- Patches of shadow or haze in the visual field
- Sometimes no pain, but a noticeable change in how clearly things look
Types of retinal vein occlusion
- Branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO): affects a smaller part of the retina when one branch vein is blocked.
- Central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO): affects the main vein draining the retina, often leading to more significant vision loss.
Why it happens
Retinal vein occlusion is often linked with underlying health conditions that affect circulation, such as:
- High blood pressure
- Diabetes
- High cholesterol
- Glaucoma
- Blood clotting disorders
Why it matters
A blocked vein causes swelling and sometimes leakage of blood and fluid into the retina. This can damage the delicate central vision area (the macula) or lead to abnormal new blood vessel growth. Without treatment, these changes can cause permanent vision loss.
How we can help
At Visionare Eye Specialists we provide:
- Comprehensive retinal imaging (including OCT scans and fluorescein angiography where needed) to assess the blockage and its impact.
- Targeted treatment such as intravitreal injections to reduce swelling and preserve vision.
- Laser treatment in some cases to manage abnormal blood vessels.
- Collaboration with your GP to address contributing health factors like blood pressure and cholesterol.
Our goal is to protect your sight and support your overall health, with clear communication every step of the way.
Your vision and comfort are our priority.
We’re here to guide you with care every step of the way.
