Pterygium
A pterygium (sometimes called “surfer’s eye”) is a fleshy growth that develops on the white of the eye and can extend onto the cornea. It is often linked to sun exposure, wind, and dust, which is why it is more common in Queensland.
While not usually dangerous, a pterygium can cause redness, irritation, and in some cases affect vision. If the growth becomes large or bothersome, pterygium surgery is the best way to restore comfort and protect sight.
