Keratoconus

Keratoconus

Keratoconus is a condition where the normally round, dome-shaped cornea becomes thinner and bulges forward into a cone-like shape. This irregular surface causes light to scatter as it enters the eye, leading to distorted or blurred vision that can’t always be corrected with glasses alone.

It often begins in the teenage years or early adulthood and tends to progress gradually over time. The exact cause isn’t fully understood, but factors such as genetics, frequent eye rubbing, allergies, and oxidative stress all play a role.

Early diagnosis is important, as modern treatments can often prevent further progression and help maintain good vision. With the right care, most people with keratoconus lead active, independent lives with excellent visual outcomes.

Treatment Options

At Visionare Eye Specialists, we tailor keratoconus management to each patient’s stage and lifestyle:

  • Glasses and contact lenses
In early cases, glasses or soft contact lenses may provide good vision. As the cornea becomes more irregular, specially designed rigid gas permeable or scleral lenses may be needed for clearer vision.
  • Intracorneal ring segments
In some cases, small plastic rings can be inserted into the cornea to improve its shape and reduce irregular astigmatism.
  • Corneal cross-linking
This treatment strengthens the cornea using a special vitamin (riboflavin) and UV light. Cross-linking is highly effective at stopping keratoconus from getting worse, especially when done early.
  • Corneal transplant
For advanced keratoconus where other measures no longer work, a corneal transplant may be needed. As a fellowship-trained corneal specialist, Dr Nick Toalster has extensive experience in modern transplant techniques, including partial-thickness (deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty, DALK) which preserves more of your own eye tissue.
Living Well with Keratoconus

Beyond medical treatments, lifestyle also plays a role. Avoiding frequent eye rubbing, protecting your eyes from UV light, and keeping up with regular check-ups can make a big difference. We’ll partner with your optometrist to ensure you receive ongoing care and support.
