Keratitis

Understanding the condition

Keratitis means inflammation of the cornea — the clear window at the front of the eye. It can be caused by infection (bacterial, viral, fungal, or parasitic) or by non-infectious factors such as dry eye, eyelid problems, or contact lens wear. Because the cornea is vital for focusing light, keratitis can significantly affect vision if not treated promptly.

Symptoms
  • Red, painful or irritated eye
  • Sensitivity to light (photophobia)
  • Blurred or reduced vision
  • Tearing or discharge
  • A feeling of grit or something in the eye
Causes

Infectious keratitis:

  • Bacterial – often linked with contact lens wear or trauma
  • Viral – commonly herpes simplex or shingles (herpes zoster)
  • Fungal – can follow eye injury, especially with plant matter, or occur in humid environments
  • Parasitic (Acanthamoeba) – rare, but serious; usually linked with contact lenses and water exposure

Non-infectious keratitis:

  • Severe dry eye
  • Eyelid or lash disorders (e.g. entropion, trichiasis)
  • Allergic or toxic reactions to drops or contact lenses
Why it matters

Some forms of keratitis can progress quickly and threaten vision, especially infectious keratitis. Scarring or thinning of the cornea can cause permanent loss of clarity. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are essential to protect sight.
