Glaucoma

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a common eye condition where the optic nerve — the nerve that connects the eye to the brain — becomes damaged, usually due to high pressure inside the eye. It is sometimes called the “silent thief of sight,” because it often causes no symptoms in the early stages.

The good news is that when detected and treated early, most people with glaucoma keep excellent vision for life. At Visionare Eye Specialists, our role is to guide you with expert care and the latest treatments so you can feel confident about your future sight.

Types of Glaucoma

There are several forms of glaucoma, each needing a tailored approach:

  • Open-angle glaucoma - the most common type, usually slow and painless.
  • Angle-closure glaucoma - less common but can be sudden and urgent.
  • Secondary glaucoma  - develops due to other eye conditions or injury.
  • Congenital glaucoma - a rare form present from birth.
How We Treat Glaucoma

Treatment is personalised, aiming to protect your vision and quality of life.
Options include:

These, along with laser, are often the first step, reducing pressure inside the eye. Many people manage their glaucoma long-term with drops alone.

Modern laser options, such as Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT), can effectively lower eye pressure. Laser is generally performed in the clinic, taking only a few minutes. It is usually quick, safe, and repeatable.

Our subspecialist glaucoma surgeon performs advanced minimally invasive procedures that lower eye pressure with faster recovery and fewer risks than traditional surgery. These techniques use tiny stents or devices, often performed at the same time as cataract surgery, to improve the eye’s natural fluid drainage. MIGS can reduce the need for daily eye drops while helping to protect long-term vision.

In advanced or complex cases, operations such as trabeculectomy or glaucoma drainage devices may be the best way to protect vision.

Supporting Your Eye Health

While medical and surgical care is central, overall health also plays a role:

  • Diet & lifestyle — A balanced diet rich in leafy greens, omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants supports general eye health. Regular exercise, avoiding smoking, and maintaining healthy blood pressure can also be helpful.
  • Supplements — Some patients ask about supplements. While no pill can cure glaucoma, certain nutrients (such as vitamin B3/niacin and omega-3s) have been studied for their potential to support optic nerve health.
  • Wellbeing — Managing glaucoma is about more than just drops or surgery — it’s about living well. We’ll encourage and support you every step of the way.
