Flashes, Floaters & Retinal Detachment

Flashes, Floaters & Retinal Detachment

Understanding the condition

Many people experience flashes (brief flickers of light) or floaters (moving spots or cobweb shapes in the vision). These are often harmless age-related changes in the vitreous, the clear gel inside the eye.

However, in some cases, the vitreous can pull strongly on the retina and cause a retinal tear. If fluid passes through this tear, it may lift the retina away from the back wall of the eye — a retinal detachment. This is an urgent condition that can threaten sight.

Why it happens
  • Age-related changes in the vitreous (posterior vitreous detachment)
  • Nearsightedness (myopia), which stretches the retina
  • Previous eye surgery or trauma
  • Family history of retinal problems
Why it matters

Most floaters are benign and simply monitored. But when associated with flashes or a shadow, they may signal a retinal tear or detachment. If left untreated, a detachment can cause permanent vision loss. Early recognition and treatment make the difference in preserving sight.

How we can help

At Visionare Eye Specialists, we provide urgent, same-day assessment for new flashes and floaters. Depending on what we find, treatment may include:

  • Laser therapy or cryotherapy (freezing) to seal small retinal tears
  • Vitrectomy surgery to remove the vitreous and repair the retina
  • Scleral buckle surgery to support the retina
  • Gas or silicone oil tamponade to hold the retina in place while it heals

Our priority is to quickly identify whether your symptoms are harmless or sight-threatening, and to provide expert treatment when needed.

When to seek urgent care

Most floaters are harmless, but if you notice a sudden shower of new floaters, flashing lights, or a shadow/curtain in your vision, you should have your eyes checked at Visionare Eye Specialists or with your optometrist promptly. Flashes and new floaters should be assessed generally within 48 hours, while the appearance of a curtain coming across your vision or sudden loss of vision requires immediate same-day review. Early treatment gives the best chance of protecting your sight.

Your vision and comfort are our priority.

We’re here to guide you with care every step of the way.
