Epiretinal Membrane & Macular Hole
Understanding the condition
The macula is the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision needed for reading, recognising faces, and seeing fine detail.
- An epiretinal membrane (ERM) is a thin layer of scar tissue that forms on the macula’s surface, causing it to wrinkle. This can lead to blurred or distorted vision.
- A macular hole is a small opening that develops in the macula itself, usually from age-related changes in the vitreous gel inside the eye. This can create a dark or missing spot in central vision.
Symptoms
- Blurred or distorted central vision
- Straight lines appearing bent or wavy (metamorphopsia)
- Difficulty reading or recognising faces
- A dark patch or gap in the centre of vision (more typical of macular hole)
- Usually no pain, but a noticeable change in vision quality
Why it happens
Epiretinal membranes and macular holes are often age-related, but other causes include:
- Previous retinal tears or detachment
- Diabetic retinopathy or retinal vein occlusion
- Eye trauma or inflammation
- After cataract surgery in some cases
Why it matters
Even though these conditions usually affect one eye, they can significantly impact daily activities. Vision often declines gradually with ERM, while macular holes may cause more sudden and severe central vision loss. Without treatment, these conditions can progress, making tasks like reading or driving increasingly difficult.
How we can help
At Visionare Eye Specialists we provide:
- Comprehensive retinal imaging (including OCT scans) to confirm the diagnosis and track changes.
- Management by vitreoretinal surgeon for surgery where appropriate. This usually involves a vitrectomy to remove scar tissue (for ERM) or to repair the macular hole.
- Close follow-up care to monitor healing, provide guidance, and support you through the recovery process.
Most patients experience stabilisation or improvement in vision after treatment. Our goal is to protect your central vision, explain the options clearly, and guide you every step of the way.
Your vision and comfort are our priority.
We’re here to guide you with care every step of the way.
