Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy is a common complication of diabetes that affects the tiny blood vessels of the retina — the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. Over time, high blood sugar levels can damage these vessels, leading to bleeding, swelling, or the growth of fragile new vessels that threaten vision.

Many people have no symptoms in the early stages, which is why regular eye checks are vital for anyone with diabetes. An optometrist or GP may first detect changes during a routine exam and refer you to one of our ophthalmologists at Visionare Eye Specialists. Early referral and treatment can make a major difference in preserving sight.

Living well with diabetes and eye health

Protecting your vision starts with good overall diabetes control. You can reduce your risk of sight-threatening complications by:

  • Keeping blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol well controlled
  • Not smoking
  • Maintaining regular exercise and a healthy diet
  • Attending your recommended eye checks, even if your vision feels normal

If you have diabetes and notice sudden floaters, flashing lights, blurred vision, or dark patches, seek urgent review.
