Corneal Transplant

Corneal Transplant

A corneal transplant (also called a corneal graft) is a procedure where a damaged or diseased cornea is replaced with healthy donor tissue. This can restore vision, reduce pain, and improve the strength and clarity of the eye.

Types of Corneal Transplant

Not all transplants are the same. Modern surgery often allows us to replace only the diseased layers of the cornea, leading to faster recovery and lower risk of rejection. The main types are:

  • DMEK (Descemet’s Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty) – replacement of just the innermost cell layer, used in conditions such as Fuchs dystrophy.
  • DSAEK (Descemet’s Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty) – replacement of a thin back layer of the cornea.
  • PK (Penetrating Keratoplasty) – full-thickness transplant, used when the entire cornea is scarred or very weak.
  • DALK (Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty) – replacement of the front layer of the cornea, often recommended for keratoconus.

Your surgeon will recommend the approach best suited to your condition, whether that is Fuchs dystrophy, keratoconus, scarring after infection, or another corneal disease.

Aftercare and follow-up

Successful healing depends not only on the surgery itself but also on careful follow-up afterwards. Regular check-ups are important to monitor for signs of healing, astigmatism, or rejection.

Eye-drop medication plays a vital role in preventing infection and rejection. It’s essential to use these drops exactly as prescribed, often for many months or even years after the transplant. Most patients find this routine straightforward, and our team will provide clear instructions and support.

While the idea of a transplant can sound daunting, most patients find the procedure safe, and the improvement in vision is often life-changing. We’ll guide you carefully through every step, so you can feel confident and supported throughout your recovery.
